Renowned Orff Schulwerk Educator and Music Education Leader Dr. Robert de Frece Passes Away

The American Orff-Schulwerk Association (AOSA) mourns the passing of Dr. Robert de Frece, who died Tuesday, January 7, 2026. Dr. de Frece, affectionately known as Bob, was a transformative figure in Orff Schulwerk education whose influence resonated throughout North America and beyond.

Dr. de Frece co-authored the 2012 AOSA Teacher Education Levels Course Curriculum, helping shape the foundational standards for Orff Schulwerk teacher training. Although Canadian, his impact on music education in the United States was profound. For over 20 years, he taught Orff Schulwerk at Hofstra University, and since 1993, he presented courses and workshops throughout the country, captivating participants with his energetic, inspiring teaching style and magical pedagogical ideas. He was a beloved presenter at numerous AOSA National Conferences.

A Professor Emeritus of Music and Music Education at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Dr. de Frece retired in 2008 after a distinguished career in both the Faculties of Education and Arts. He taught Orff Schulwerk certification courses at the University of Alberta and continued sharing his expertise across the United States, Canada, and the People’s Republic of China.

Dr. de Frece’s contributions to music education extended far beyond Orff Schulwerk. He authored three widely-used books: “Singing Round the Year,” “Hooray for Singing,” and “Brought To You By…A Commercial Revue,” and served as contributing author for the McGraw Hill “Share the Music” series. He also co-authored two music series published by Macmillan/McGraw-Hill: “Share the Music” and “Spotlight on Music,” with numerous additional publications through Alfred Publishing.

His musical leadership included serving as Music Director of the Greenwood Singers and the University of Alberta Mixed Chorus. He founded and directed the University of Alberta Faculty of Education Handbell Ringers, arranging much of their repertoire—work he loved deeply. Dr. de Frece also directed choirs at Archbishop Jordan High School in Sherwood Park, Alberta for nine years and served six years as a Music Consultant with Alberta Education.

Dr. de Frece’s distinguished service to the choral music community included two years on the National Board of Directors of the Association of Canadian Choral Conductors and a term as president of the Alberta Choral Federation. From 1971 to 1979, he served as Alberta’s Assistant Provincial Carillonneur, and from 1979 to 1996 as Provincial Carillonneur.

His exceptional contributions earned numerous honors throughout his lifetime, including the Alberta Centennial Medal (2005), Richard S. Eaton Award of Distinction (2004), City of Edmonton Arts & Culture Hall of Fame (2004), Alumni Honour Award from the U of A Alumni Association (2002), Con Spirito Award from the Alberta Choral Federation (1998), Faculty of Education Undergraduate Teaching Award (1993), and Rutherford Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching (1993). In 2024, he received the Lifetime Achievement Award from Choir Alberta.

Dr. de Frece will be remembered as a consummate musician and educator whose joy, warmth, and passion for music touched countless lives. His legacy lives on in the thousands of teachers and students he inspired throughout his remarkable career. He will be greatly missed by the music education community worldwide.
