More About Funds

The Annual Fund

AOSA Annual Fund helps AOSA pay its bills. Membership dues only cover one third of AOSA’s operating costs. The Annual Fund bridges the difference between revenue earned from dues, conference registrations, sales, and investment interest and the expenses of AOSA’s work over the course of the year. Your gift to the AOSA Annual Fund allows AOSA to create publications like Reverberations and The Orff Echo, increase member programming and services, and maintain the daily operations of the organization.

The Endowment Fund

AOSA Endowment Funds provide the capital necessary to ensure the well-being of AOSA in the future, so children will continue to benefit from Orff Schulwerk. All of AOSA’s endowed funds are encumbered, which means that we preserve the principle of these investments, spending only the interest. The AOSA endowment porfolio includes:

  • The Gunild Keetman Assistance Fund supports assistance for Orff Schulwerk teacher training, special studies, or creative projects for those who show financial need.
  • The International Outreach Fund provides partial funding of air transportation for qualified teacher educators who accept approved assignments in other countries.
  • The Research Fund gives financial assistance for research on the many aspects of music learning advocated by the Orff Schulwerk approach.
  • The Shields-Gillespie Scholarship Fund makes funds available to pre-school or kindergarten teachers of low-income populations for training, instruments, and other projects.
  • The Training and Projects (TAP) Fund provides assistance to teachers of low-income students for teacher training, equipment, outreach activities, or related projects.
  • The Wildflower Legacy recognizes and honors those who include AOSA in their estate plans. It gives us the opportunity to thank people who are planning for AOSA with these thoughtful and generous gifts. For more information contact the Executive Director or call (440) 600-7329.
  • The Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian (BBIA) Outreach Fund is to provide financial support to teachers from BBIA backgrounds to attend the AOSA Professional Development Conference.
  • The Michael Ruel Nichols Fund provides financial aid to AOSA members to specifically encourage and support all aspects of recorder instruction in public and private schools grades K-12.

The Urban Education Grant

The Urban Education Grant, gifted by Judith Thompson-Barthwell in 2024, is specifically designed to provide Orff Schulwerk professional development opportunities to educators and schools in urban city areas that primarily serve Black, Brown, Indigenous, and Asian (BBIA) students, have a smaller tax base for education than surrounding suburbs, and maintain larger class sizes.
